Mets' GM job down to Bloom, Van Wagenen

NEW YORK -- The Mets are down to their final two candidates for general manager.

The team on Thursday eliminated Doug Melvin from contention, according to a source, thinning their field of candidates to two: Rays senior vice president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom, and CAA agent Brodie Van Wagenen. The club could make a decision as soon as Monday, though negotiating a contract for the new GM might require additional time.

The final candidate to meet with the Mets, Bloom elected not to meet with the media "out of respect for his current role." Instead, he released a brief statement that read: "We had a productive meeting [Wednesday].
