Mets finally stick Robinson Cano on IL after curious wait

Robinson Cano is going on the IL after all.

The Mets shelved the veteran infielder Sunday with left quad tightness and called up reliever Tim Peterson to replace him on the roster.

Cano lasted just a few innings before exiting his first game from a strained left calf back on Wednesday.

Before he returns the next time, manager Mickey Callaway said Cano will go on a rehab assignment. Both expressed hope he wouldn’t need to go on the IL, but that changed on Sunday.
