It has gotten late stunningly early for the Mets, their pitching ace and their top slugger disabled and incapable of being merchants of intimidation, their Dark Knight a menace mostly to himself, their bullpen a dark blight and Jacob deGrom the last unbreakable man standing on what was supposed to be a Core Four, but is a Sore Four instead.
DeGrom, bold in escaping a bases-loaded, no outs predicament in the seventh inning with his indomitable will and moxie, managed to stop the bleeding Friday night against the Angels. As a result, the Mets carried a one-game winning streak instead of an eight-game losing streak into Saturday night.
