Mets fall to Royals despite Manaea’s return and 9th inning comeback

Today’s game was a big one for the Mets. Not because the result particularly mattered any more than any other July interleague game would. But because it was the day they finally saw the return of last year’s ace, left-hander Sean Manaea, following a series of injuries that have plagued him since spring training. The Mets came into the day planning for Manaea to make his 2025 big league debut in relief following the end of starter Clay Holmes’s outing, and those plans went about as well as one could possibly have hoped for. Based on that—and with the hope that this outing foretells a second half in which the Mets will finally have the guy who anchored last year’s rotation back at full strength—today was an unqualified success.
