PORT ST. LUCIE — The Mets and Neil Walker remained far apart on a potential contract extension Monday, to the point team officials believe the proposal is probably dead, according to an industry source.
Walker accepted a qualifying offer worth $17.2 million for this season, and there is thought the club was looking for a new deal that would have reduced its 2017 payout while giving the second baseman two additional years of security.
The two sides discussed a three-year deal in the offseason worth about $40 million.
Walker, 31, is coming off September surgery for a herniated disk in his back.
