Mets call up Drew Smith, option Trevor Hildenberger

Before their game this afternoon at Citi Field, the Mets called up right-handed relief pitcher Drew Smith and optioned fellow right-handed relief pitcher Trevor Hildenberger to Triple-A Syracuse. Smith had been in Syracuse himself to start the minor league season—which only got underway last week—and threw two scoreless innings in his lone appearance at that level.

Acquired by the Mets in the trade that sent Lucas Duda to the Rays in 2017, Smith threw 28.0 innings at the major league level in 2018 with a 3.54 ERA and 3.66 FIP. But he missed all of 2019 after having Tommy John surgery, and in very limited work with the Mets during the shortened 2020 season, he threw just seven innings and had a 6.
