Matz blames 'mistakes' instead of bone spurs for recent struggles

The surgery was performed Monday, July 18, by preeminent TOS surgeon Dr. Thompson in St. Louis.

The surgery removed a rib that is constricting nerves and blood vessels - that travel through his shoulder - where the rib connects to the upper spine. Removing the rib creates space and alleviates the constriction, which will restore feeling in Harvey's pitching arm and fingers.

"Terry and I met with Matt, and although we all feel badly for him, we expressed our support in this decision and know he will work as hard as possible to get back on the field for the 2017 season," Mets GM Sandy Alderson said in a statement on July 8.
