Juan Lagares feels ‘normal,’ but his thumb doesn’t look it

MIAMI — Juan Lagares’ left hand was heavily wrapped Sunday to resemble a boxing glove, but looks can be deceiving.

The Mets outfielder was diagnosed with a sprained left thumb, after leaving Saturday’s game against the Marlins for precautionary reasons. Lagares had experienced numbness in the thumb after making a diving catch in center field.

Lagares described his thumb as feeling “normal.” He will be examined by Mets doctors on Monday in New York, as is the team protocol, but indicated he expects to arrive in Pittsburgh before game time.

Yoenis Cespedes was absent from the starting lineup, but made a pinch-hitting appearance in the eighth inning and was retired.
