Jason Vargas departs today’s game with mild hamstring tightness

One night after the New York Mets used up all of their pitchers in an 18-inning loss, the team was looking for some depth from starting pitcher Jason Vargas. Those plans were derailed early on in this afternoon’s game when Vargas was removed from after experiencing mild hamstring tightness. No further updates have been provided by the club.

After tossing 50 pitches over the first four innings of today’s game, Mickey Callaway lifted Vargas for pinch-hitter Michael Conforto with two outs in the fifth inning. It originally seemed like a peculiar move, as Callaway said before the game that Vargas was “probably going to have to get to his pitch count no matter what” but the injury helps clarify the move.
