Jacob deGrom’s proud dad tells backstory of pitcher’s Mets rise

ARLINGTON, Va. — The proudest person in the room Wednesday was Tony deGrom, Jake’s dad.

He was there for the press conference at the Ritz-Carlton hotel to announce Jacob deGrom’s five-year, $137.5 million extension with the Mets.

Tony sees even greater things in his son’s future, a son who is coming off a Cy Young season and will be on the mound Thursday against the Nationals’ Max Scherzer, who has won three Cy Young Awards, in the season opener at Nationals Park.

Maybe deGrom, 30, will some day catch Scherzer.

When The Post asked Tony deGrom if he thinks his son is capable of winning a second Cy Young, Tony answered: “I think he’s capable of winning a few more Cy Youngs.
