The Mets entered the 1969 season merely hoping to play .500 baseball after winning a club-record 73 games the previous year, and never having finished higher than second-to-last in the National League or owning a winning record beyond nine games into a season in their seven years as a franchise.

It was the first season of divisional baseball in MLB and the inaugural year of the National League East.
