Harvey to start season opener for Mets

PORT ST. LUCIE. Fla. -- With uncertainty swirling around Jacob deGrom's availability for Opening Day, the Mets on Thursday named Matt Harvey their starting pitcher when they play the Royals in Kansas City on April 3.

Harvey, 26, went 13-8 with a 2.71 ERA last season, his first since undergoing Tommy John surgery in October 2013.

Though deGrom posted better overall statistics than Harvey last year, his wife is due to give birth to the couple's first child right around April 3, putting his availability in Kansas City in question. The Mets have not yet committed to a starter for the second game of the season on April 5.
