Former Mets Co-Owner Nelson Doubleday Jr. Dies

LOCUST VALLEY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Former Mets co-owner Nelson Doubleday Jr. has died at the age of 81.

Doubleday died Wednesday in his home in Locust Valley, Long Island, according to a New York Times report.

Doubleday had been president of Doubleday publishing when he bought a majority stake in the club along with Fred Wilpon in 1980.

He was credited with putting the team on the course to win the World Series in 1986, the Times reported.

Wilpon bought out Doubleday in 2002.
