Brodie Van Wagenen will be introduced as the Mets’ new general manager this week, at least answering the question of who will fill the seat vacated by Sandy Alderson last summer. But Van Wagenen’s selection now brings the focus to the important issues facing the new GM:
Will he be allowed to spend?
If Van Wagenen is under orders to slash payroll from the 2018 figure of roughly $155 million, it probably won’t matter much who is sitting in the GM chair. The Mets will be playing for third place in the NL East.
