Dick Scott named bench coach for Mets

NEW YORK -- The New York Mets have named Dick Scott their bench coach. Scott previously had served as the team's director of player development. He succeeds Bob Geren, who departed for the bench-coach role with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Scott, 53, has served as a minor league coach with the Oakland Athletics and Arizona Diamondbacks.

He primarily was a shortstop during his professional career. That means the Mets will not have a former catcher on their big league staff in 2016.
