Alderson, Mets get their look at Cuban stud Yulieski Gourriel

WASHINGTON — Yulieski Gourriel had plenty of eyes on him Monday during a workout for the Mets in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

General manager Sandy Alderson and special assistant J.P. Ricciardi joined several of the team’s top scouts in evaluating the highly regarded Cuban third baseman.

It remains a long shot the Mets will make a serious play on Gourriel, even with the club’s opening at third base with David Wright likely sidelined for the remainder of the season. Gourriel is expected to receive a work out from the Yankees, among other teams.

The Mets have traditionally remained hesitant to sign players directly arriving from Cuba because of the risk factor involved in trying to determine how a player’s skills will translate to the American game.
