The New York Knicks are clearing up cap space in a significant way. Embattled shooting guard Arron Afflalo declined his $8 million player option for the 2016-17 season, thus pushing the Knicks’ cap space to roughly $28 million.
According to Ian Begley of ESPN New York, Derrick Williams followed suit by declining his $4.6 million player option, thus pushing the Knicks’ cap space to upwards of $32 million.
That’s a surprising development, to some extent, but it’s also the rational decision.
Had he accepted his player option, Williams would’ve received $4,598,000 in 2016-17.
