So, here’s the thing. Narratives are only written after the game. I remember in 2002, the St. Louis Cardinals dealt with the tragic loss of pitcher Darryl Kile, who died of a heart attack midseason. It was obviously a major shock, but then Kile became a rallying cry for the team. When they clinched the division, Albert Pujols carried Kile’s jersey around the field. When they won the NLDS, it seemed like they were a team of destiny. They were going to win this thing for Kile. Then…they lost in the NLCS. Because you can’t write narratives before the games.
