New York Knicks Fire Head Coach Derek Fisher

The New York Knicks have fired head coach Derek Fisher, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.

Assistant coach Kurt Rambis will take over as interim head coach, according to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne.

Fisher took over as head coach of the Knicks last year, and led them to a 17-65 record, which is the worst record in team history. New York ranks 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 23-31 record so far this season, and have lost nine of their last 10 games.

Fisher becomes the fifth head coach to be fired this season, joining Kevin McHale (Rockets), Lionel Hollins (Nets), David Blatt (Cavaliers), and Jeff Hornacek (Suns).

Knicks president Phil Jackson hired Fisher following Fisher's retirement from the NBA as a player after Steve Kerr agreed to coach the Golden State Warriors instead of New York. Fisher won five championships under Phil Jackson with the Los Angeles Lakers in his career.

Rambis served as the interim head coach of the Lakers in 1999, leading them to a 24-13 record and to the Western Conference Semifinals. Los Angeles hired Jackson to be their head coach the following season, and Rambis was an assistant under Jackson from 2001-2004.

He got his first and only full-time head coaching job with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2009, but didn't experience much success. Minnesota went just 32-132 in two seasons under Rambis before he was fired.
