The contract language that is making Jets and Darnold dig in

There was no Sam Darnold on the field again Sunday and no sign of thawing between him and the Jets in their contract negotiations.

The rookie quarterback now has missed three practices, and there is no end in sight. It is possible the two sides reach a compromise soon, but that feels unlikely at the moment. This could last a while.

The main issue holding up the deal is language in the contract pertaining to why the Jets could void guaranteed money in the four-year, fully guaranteed $30 million deal. The Jets have language in the contract that could void Darnold’s deal if he is fined by the league for violations of any NFL on-field or off-field policy.
