Redskins could complicate Jets plan, hold Kirk Cousins hostage

MINNEAPOLIS — Signing quarterback Kirk Cousins might not be as easy as expected for the Jets, or any other team.

ESPN reported Sunday the Redskins are considering placing the franchise tag on Cousins, which would enable them to trade him and get something in return rather than letting him walk for nothing in free agency.

It seems like an unlikely move, as it would be risky for Washington, but the ESPN report cited sources saying the Redskins are at least talking about it. Washington sent a third-round pick to the Chiefs as part of the trade for quarterback Alex Smith, so that is probably the starting point of what they would be looking for in a Cousins deal.
