Lorenzo Mauldin expected to have season-ending back surgery

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin, already on injured reserve after hurting his back in training camp, received a grim prognosis Thursday and likely won't play this season.

Surgery was recommended to repair a herniated disk, Jets coach Todd Bowles said. Mauldin will seek a second opinion; he'll be finished for 2017 if he has the surgery.

"His back got significantly worse," Bowles said.

Mauldin was hurt early in training camp, returned for one practice and never practiced again. If healthy, he would've challenged for a starting job at outside linebacker.
