BOCA RATON, Fla. — In an effort to clear more salary cap space, the Jets converted $3.69 million of James Carpenter’s $4.45 million base salary in 2016 into a signing bonus, a source confirmed to Newsday.
By doing so, the team will create $2.46 million in cap room.
With the recent free-agent signings of nose tackle Steve McLendon and defensive end Jarvis Jenkins (whose deal still is not yet official), salary cap maneuvers were expected to be made.
Expect more moves if and when the Jets re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Jets also need to set aside about $5 million for their incoming draft class, too.
