Jets cut loose veteran linebackers as roster trim begins

The Jets began paring their roster Friday by cutting 18 players. There will be more cuts Saturday as they trim the roster to 53 players by 4 p.m.

There were no major shockers in the Friday cuts. Linebackers David Bass and Kevin Minter were mild surprises. Bass had 3.5 sacks for the Jets last season. Minter was in the mix as a backup inside linebacker, but the veteran did not make it.

Five veteran players were released: Bass, Minter, wide receiver Charles Johnson, offensive lineman Gino Gradkowski and defensive lineman Kendall Reyes.

Thirteen players were waived.
