Scott Mayfield is a steady presence on the ice for the New York Islanders, and as the team rides a three-game point streak, the veteran defenseman sees a group trending in the right direction — both in their play and their mindset.
“I think we’re doing a lot of good things,” Mayfield said after Thursday’s practice. “It starts with our goaltending and just making those little plays, coming out of the zone as a group of five. On the forecheck, we’re getting in there and trying to create chances.”
The Isles have tightened up defensively during the stretch, allowing fewer turnovers and managing the puck with greater care.
