Isles assign Devon Toews and Jan Kovar to AHL affiliate

The Islanders re-assigned defenseman Devon Toews, 24, and Jan Kovar, 28, a Czech-born center who played the past five seasons in the KHL, to Bridgeport (AHL) on Tuesday as the team must submit its 23-man regular-season roster later in the day.

In addition, Andrew Ladd was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday retroactive to Sept. 16, though president and general manager Lou Lamoriello said he expects the veteran left wing to resume practicing on Wednesday and is eligible to be activated whenever he’s ready to play.

The Islanders also were waiting to see whether forward Tom Kuhnhackl, 26, the ex-Penguin signed to a one-year, one-way, $700,000 deal, cleared waivers, which would leave him eligible to be re-assigned to Bridgeport.
