Why did Giants play their likely No. 2 RB so much?

Here are three takeaways from the Giants’ 31-29 preseason-ending win over the Patriots on Thursday night:

1. Wayne Gallman is, presumably, the No. 2 running back behind Saquon Barkley and locked into a roster spot. Why, then, was he running the ball in the second quarter and then in the third and fourth quarters (He scored a touchdown, powering in on a 6-yard run, with 13:27 remaining) after Paul Perkins, a player on the bubble, started the game?

2. Mr. Reliable, Golden Tate, started and made an over-the-shoulder catch for 23 yards in the first quarter.
