Why did Giants cut Davis Webb? Pat Shurmur's answers defy accepted NFL ways

Rule No. 1 to know about first-year Giants coach Pat Shurmur: Don't read too much into offseason and preseason practice reps.

The Giants' decision to cut second-year backup quarterback Davis Webb in favor of keeping third-stringer Kyle Lauletta and fourth-stringer Alex Tanney went against a couple points of accepted NFL logic. Most notably, the depth chart in practice translates to game day.

Webb played ahead of Lauletta and Tanney in every practice since April, including starting against the Lions in Week 2 of the preseason alongside most of the first-team offense.
