Johnson signed with the Giants before Week 1 after getting cut by the Ravens. Johnson was the Giants' third quarterback until backup Ryan Nassib was placed on injured reserve in Week 16. Johnson didn't see any game action after getting promoted to the No. 2 job.
Johnson should have the early edge in the backup competition because he has a year in the Giants' system and Smith is recovering from a torn ACL. But Smith looked sharp in limited work this spring and the former second round pick has higher upside as a backup. It's too early to call this battle right now.
