This is a two-man battle between Smith and Johnson for the backup job. Manning is entrenched as the starter and the Giants plan to bring Webb along slowly as the third quarterback. Webb impressed this spring, but don't get carried away into believing he can overtake two veterans for the backup job this summer. There are only so many quarterback reps available in camp and the Giants have a clear plan for Webb's development. They don't want a long-term project one sprained ankle away from leading the team. That's the role for Smith, who has the starting experience and upside to provide confidence that he could keep the team afloat if the indestructible Manning goes down.
