Here Are 5 Candidates To Replace Jerry Reese As Giants General Manager

In addition to firing head coach Ben McAdoo, the New York Giants have also fired general manager Jerry Reese. The move ends Reese's 20-plus year time with the organization, including 10 years as the general manager. The Giants will now conduct two major searches: one for a head coach (some candidates are here) and one for a general manager. The General Manager job might be filled first, in order to allow the new GM to have input on whoever is hired as head coach.

Much like with any coaching search, more than five candidates will be considered. Expect to hear names like Duke Tobin (Bengals player personnel) and Will McClay (Cowboys player personnel) suggested as candidates. However, those two are often mentioned as options and always elect to stay with their current teams because they have plenty of power already. Someone like Louis Riddick (who has recently been linked to jobs) is also a threat. But those aren't the top options for the Giants. With that in mind, here are the top 5 candidates to become the next Giants GM.

5. George Paton, Vikings assistant GM
Paton has been with the Vikings for over a decade now and has helped put together one of the best young rosters in the league in Minnesota. Paton was in the mix for the 49ers job last year and he'll remain in the mix for any jobs that open up this year. At some point, Paton will become a general manager in the NFL, but he seems willing to wait for the right opportunity.

4. John Dorsey, former Chiefs GM
The Chiefs decision to fire Dorsey was a surprising one. Assuming the 57-year-old wants to return to the NFL, he will have plenty of interest from NFL teams. Dorsey has already been connected to the Giants job and that won't be the last. Every team will likely have interest in Dorsey, but there are a few candidates who might interest the Giants a little more.

3. Nick Caserio, Patriots VP of player personnel
Caserio, much like Patriots coordinators Josh McDaniels and Matt Patricia, has been picky. He could have easily left for a promotion already, but has elected to stay in New England. However, the Giants might be the type of organization to lure Caserio away from the Patriots. McDaniels and Caserio (or McDaniels and Riddick, since they are very close) could be an ideal package deal for the Giants.

2. Kevin Abrams, Giants Interim GM
The Giants love to keep things in-house, as they've shown with general manager moves (hiring Reese after Ernie Accorsi retired) and coaching moves (promoting McAdoo). Abrams fits that mold, as he's the current interim GM. Abrams has been with the team for nearly two decades, with a background in the salary cap. One another strong element at play for Abrams is the presence of Accorsi, who will serve as a consultant. It just so happens that Accorsi recommended Abrams to the Lions when their GM job was open a few years ago. But the biggest problem for Abrams is that things clearly aren't working out in New York right now. Is hiring from within the proper way to go?

1. Dave Gettleman, former Panthers GM
Much like Dorsey, Gettleman was a surprise fire by the Panthers before the season. Although he is 66 years old, Gettleman would be the perfect hire for the Giants. He was very successful with the Panthers, checking off a box that someone like Abrams lacks at the moment. And perhaps just as importantly, Gettleman has ties to the organization. Before leaving to run the Panthers, Gettleman was a member of the Giants front office from 1998-2012, with most of those years spent on the pro personnel side. Hiring Gettleman gives the Giants someone they know and who has proven himself. Assuming Gettleman wants to return to an NFL front office, it's almost too perfect of a fit.
