New York City FC’s Yangel Herrera provided what would be the decisive spot kick as Venezuela bested Uruguay in a penalty shootout in Daejon, South Korea to earn a spot in the championship match of the U20 World Cup.
Uruguay held a 1-0 lead for nearly the entirety of the second half through Nicolas de la Cruz, but late substitute Samuel Sosa struck a masterful free kick one minute into stoppage time to keep the dream alive for la Vinotinto.
All three of Venezuela’s knockout-round matches have been tied after 90 minutes.
