The New York City FC-Red Bulls rivalry is not just MLS’ newest, but is rapidly becoming the most heated. That point was driven home even before Saturday’s game kicked off at Yankee Stadium, as fans of the two teams clashed on River Avenue.
It was just the fourth installment of this rivalry, and the first meeting this season. But it’s the second time hostilities have boiled over.
Even before the red-clad Red Bulls supporters arrived, NYCFC fans were spitting on and ripping up Red Bull flags. Others burned Red Bull paraphernalia in effigy.
