New York City made the long voyage west to Seattle. They’ll be returning with all three points, as Frank Lampard scored his second goal in two games, staking the Blues to a second straight win. Left back Ronald Matarrita notched his first MLS goal to seal the win.
There was a bit of controversy in Lampard’s goal. Andrea Pirlo delivered the ball into the box from a corner kick. RJ Allen was first to it, popping it up to an opportunistic Lampard, who appeared to chest the ball into the goal. Further replays showed that the ball actually came off Lampard’s left hand; but since Lampard had actively sought to tuck his left arm away as he made contact, referee Alan Kelly let the goal stand, correctly.
