NYCFC’s funky new formation only leads to a draw

New York City FC remained undefeated against Toronto FC in the teams’ fourth matchup, playing to a 2-2 draw before a sellout crowd of 30,315 Sunday in the home opener at Yankee Stadium.

Unveiling a funky 3-4-1-2 European formation, some may have questioned head coach Patrick Viera’s tactics, especially with his team conceding three goals to the Fire last week, but for most of Sunday’s match, the new formation seemed to clog a busy Toronto midfield, virtually shutting down United States international Michael Bradley and Toronto’s attack.

Toronto attacked early, but had nothing to show for it thanks to continued efforts by newcomers Frederic Brilliant and Ronald Matarrita.
