The fans were ready from the opening whistle Sunday, packing Yankee Stadium and immediately filling the air with the roars of their cheers.
Unfortunately, NYCFC were not.
Toronto FC’s Sebastian Giovinco opened the scoring with a right-footed blast into the lower left corner of net in the sixth minute before adding another 13 minutes later on a penalty kick.
Jozy Altidore added in the 30th minute for good measure, and Toronto FC turned NYCFC’s playoff debut into a nightmare, picking up a 5-0 win (7-0 on aggregate) to move on to the Eastern Conference Finals.
In just their second season of existence, NYCFC reached the playoffs for the first time in their history, losing just once at Yankee Stadium since June 2.
