Maybe New York City FC isn’t as deep as coach Patrick Vieira thought.
Their embarrassing 2-1 loss to Real Salt Lake on Wednesday night showed holes, as Vieira tried to get cute with his lineup in the midst of NYCFC’s grueling four-game road trip, leaving five starters on the bench to preserve legs, and give others a chance.
“From the start, I think everything started with the selection,” Vieira said after the defeat. “When the selection is not good, it’s difficult for me to get something from the game.”
Something was nothing.
In his more than a year at the helm of NYCFC (5-4-2, 17 points), Vieira has had a knack for surprising decisions.
