New York City FC needed this in the worst way.

The shine was starting to rub off the new toy. The crowd, which last season often filled the lower bowl of Yankee Stadium to see the new Major League Soccer club in town, was thinner on Saturday afternoon for the team’s match against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The publicity surrounding NYCFC was beginning to spin decidedly negative, the honeymoon of the inaugural season a speck in the rearview mirror. NYCFC had not won since its March 6 opener in Chicago, a streak of seven games.
