The stars came out in Sunday’s Hudson River Derby, with New York City FC’s David Villa outshining the Red Bulls’ Bradley Wright-Phillips in a 3-2 come-from-behind win at sold-out Yankee Stadium.
The reigning Golden Boot winner Wright-Phillips notched two goals to continue his dominance of the team in blue. But this time, Villa — the reigning MLS MVP — one-upped him with a hat trick, including drawing and converting a 75th-minute penalty kick for the winner. He came off in the 90th minute to a standing ovation and chants of “MVP! MVP!” He sure looked like one Sunday.
