Sean Payton uses Lombardi Trophy, cash, and armed guards to set tone

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton loves getting creative in his motivational tactics. He chose to invoke a favorite from his team’s 2009 Super Bowl run to set the tone for a week of practice ahead of the divisional round of the 2018 NFL playoffs.

Per reports from Josh Katzenstein of the Times-Picayune and Nick Underhill of the Advocate, Payton opened the first Saints team meeting of the week with a parade. He entered the locker room flanked by armed guards with a cart laden with cash, somewhere between $201,000 and $225,000 (the reports differ), and the Lombardi Trophy won in Super Bowl 44.
