Before 1981, no NFL team had given up more than a fourth-round pick in the supplemental draft. The New Orleans Saints changed that by selecting Illinois quarterback Dave Wilson with the first overall pick in that year's supplemental draft. The Saints would end up losing a first-round pick in the 1982 draft by selecting Wilson so high. Although then head coach Bum Phillips said that he felt the pick was worth it. "We have added a top quarterback to our roster," Phillips said to the media.
