Saints at $1.7 million under salary cap leads today's Saints news update

In today's Saints news update, the New Orleans Saints' signing of former San Francisco 49ers starting center Jonathan Goodwin didn't affect their salary cap number too badly.

Per Katherine Terrell of NOLA.com, "the Saints now have $1,718,621 million in salary cap space, slightly down from their $1.9 million figure on Tuesday."

The Saints signed Goodwin to a one-year deal on Tuesday for $955,000. That is the minimum that any NFL team can pay a player who has 10 years or more of service in the league.

However, due to the bonus structure of Goodwin's contract, just under $200,000 if his salary for the 2014 NFL season will count towards the team's cap - giving the team the wiggle room necessary to find other potential veteran fits, or to scour the undrafted free agent market for bargain players that may have either been cut by other teams or have gone unsigned as of yet.
