As ESPN.com writer Kevin Pelton detailed in a comprehensive article Sunday about the Pelicans’ hiring of Alvin Gentry, the new head coach’s recent track record consists of two common themes: a) offensive efficiency and b) fast-paced attacks that capitalize on transition opportunities. Of Gentry’s past 11 teams dating back to 2004-05, a whopping seven of them have finished No. 1 in the NBA in offensive rating (measured by points per 100 possessions). Perhaps just as tellingly, in three different Gentry stops (Phoenix, Clippers, Golden State), he’s helped oversee an offense that finished either No. 1 or 2 in the league’s offensive rankings.
Up-tempo pace will be new experience for several Pelicans
