On the last day before his 2016-17 salary would become guaranteed, the New Orleans Pelicans waived guard Toney Douglas.
Douglas, who became expendable after the Pelicans added guards Langston Galloway, Tim Frazier and Buddy Hield, would have been owed slightly over $1.3 million had the Pelicans kept him on the roster this season.
By waiving Douglas, the Pelicans created a tiny bit of cap space for the 2016-17 season. At slightly over a million dollars in salary cap room, the Pelicans will still be hard pressed to add any additional pieces. Short of trading Alexis Ajinca, Tyreke Evans, or both New Orleans will be tapped out of salary cap space this season.
