Late-season folk hero Toney Douglas will not be on the bench for the New Orleans Pelicans this season. While that much was already assumed with Douglas’ contract being un-guaranteed early in the offseason, it solidified Monday afternoon, as the Cleveland Cavaliers agreed to terms to bring Douglas into camp to compete for the opportunity to play behind Kyrie Irving. The need arose last week, as veteran guard Mo Williams announced his sudden retirement at the Cavs’ Media Day.
J.R. Smith remains the big fish still un-signed in the NBA’s free agent pool. He possesses some ball-handling skills, but would not be a natural replacement as a backup point guard.
