Christian Wood, formally of the Wisconsin Herd G-League team, will essentially get an extended NBA tryout with the New Orleans Pelicans as their season comes to a close. To do this, the team parted with Jason Smith, who played for the Pelicans in 2013-2014 before returning once again in the Nikola Mirotic deal at the NBA trade deadline.
Jason Smith is 32 years old and has hardly touched the court for the Pelicans since his addition to the team in February. The decision to move on from him is essentially a no-risk move that is worth taking just to see if Christian Wood has developed the chops to fill a need on an NBA roster.
