Bryce Dejean-Jones excels in surprise first NBA start for Pelicans

As devastating as team-wide injuries were to the New Orleans Pelicans during training camp and preseason, those ailments had arguably their biggest negative impact on a player who was 100 percent healthy. For first-year pro Bryce Dejean-Jones, the Pelicans’ transactions necessitated by those injuries meant the difference between the 23-year-old beginning the 2015-16 season on an NBA roster or not. He was waived Oct. 24, largely because New Orleans had to scramble to sign point guards to run the offense in the Oct. 27 opener at Golden State. That didn’t leave any roster room left for the Iowa State product.
