ATLANTA – NBA players are fond of saying they have a “next man up” mentality, meaning everyone must be ready to step up if someone ahead of them on the depth chart is injured or unavailable. During Tuesday’s preseason game against the Hawks, that philosophy may also apply to the New Orleans Pelicans’ coaching staff.
Alvin Gentry was hampered by a stomach illness prior to the interconference matchup, which required that associate head coach Darren Erman handle Gentry’s pregame media responsibilities at Philips Arena. If Gentry is unable to coach the Pelicans against the Hawks, Erman will be the temporary head coach tonight.
