Shootout on UNM campus linked to earlier fight at football game

The shootout between a New Mexico State University basketball player and a University of New Mexico student on UNM’s campus early Saturday morning started as a plot to get revenge for a fight that happened at a football game in Las Cruces over a month earlier, according to court documents.

Mike Peake, the 21-year-old player from NMSU, was shot in the leg. Brandon Travis, the 19-year-old UNM student, was killed. Two people have been arrested, including a 17-year-old girl who was booked into the juvenile detention center and 19-year-old Jonathan Smith, who was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center early Monday morning.
