Exceeding expectations won’t be so easy this time around.
In the annual Mountain West preseason poll released Wednesday, the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team was picked to finish second this season. Two-time defending regular-season champ Colorado State was on top with 12 first-place votes, followed by the Lobos with seven and third-place Boise State, which got the remaining six top votes.
It’s a far cry from a season ago when UNM was picked ninth and finished a surprising second. Still, coach Yvonne Sanchez and her players hope to surpass preseason predictions one more time.
“That’s the goal,” Sanchez said.
